Can You Put Compostable Bags in a Food Waste Composter?

Short answer: Usually, no bag should go into the machine unless the model manual explicitly allows it and the bag is proven to be home compostable—not merely biodegradable or commercially compostable.

The safe answer for Thai homes

“Biodegradable” on a bag does not mean it will disappear in every food waste composter. A bag can wrap around a mixer, block a filter, or remain as film in the finished material. The safest routine is to use the bag as a temporary collection liner, then empty the food scraps into the machine.

Three terms that are easy to confuse

  • Biodegradable only says that a material can break down under some conditions; it does not say where, how fast, or into what.
  • Compostable may refer to a commercial composting facility with controlled heat, oxygen, and moisture—not a kitchen appliance.
  • Home compostable is more relevant to home systems, but it still does not override your composter’s manual or prove compatibility with its motor and filter.

The FTC says compostable claims need evidence that the entire product becomes usable compost safely and in a timely way in the stated system. BPI separately distinguishes Commercial Only from Commercial & Home certification.

Five checks before using any bag

  1. Does the label say home compostable, rather than only biodegradable?
  2. Can you verify the certifier and standard?
  3. Does your machine manual permit bags?
  4. Are there handles, ties, stickers, or multiple layers that may not break down together?
  5. Does the manufacturer explain how the output should be used if bag fragments remain?

The lower-risk routine

  1. Use the bag only to hold scraps temporarily.
  2. Empty food scraps into the machine and check for pieces of film.
  3. Drain watery scraps first to reduce odor and excess moisture.
  4. Dispose of the bag according to its label; do not assume it belongs in compost.
  5. If a bag was accidentally added, stop safely, inspect according to the manual, and contact service if the motor strains or makes a wrapping noise.

What this means for condos and Thai kitchens

A dryer may shrink a bag without proving that it has fully decomposed. A microbial machine depends on the conditions of its own biology. Neither type is automatically equivalent to an industrial composting facility. Ask the local seller about approved liners before buying.

Raakdin is worth considering for Thai households that want local guidance on food types, bags, moisture, and maintenance. Local support helps prevent a convenient collection habit from becoming a warranty or contamination problem.
